Ambassadors and other representatives from 30 NATO countries visited the Yokosuka US Naval Base, south of Tokyo.
The delegation of officials stationed at the NATO headquarters in Brussels is on a three-day visit to Japan that started Wednesday. On Friday at the base, the envoys inspected the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS George Washington. On the deck, the delegates were briefed on the 330-meter aircraft carrier's capabilities. They were told that fighter jets take off and land using special equipment and dedicated cables. One of the ambassadors told NHK that the tour gave them insight into how much Japan and the United States are doing by working together. The participants have apparently deepened their understanding of the role played by the Japan-US alliance in strengthening security in the Indo-Pacific region. NATO has recently been stepping up efforts to cooperate with Japan and other countries in the Indo-Pacific region, with an eye on China's military buildup and strengthening ties with Russia.
