Aung San Suu Kyi's prison term believed reduced

NHK Newsline, 2026-04-17

Myanmar pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi is believed to have had her sentence reduced by the military-backed government. It announced amnesty for thousands of prisoners on Friday.

Aung San Suu Kyi was serving a 27-year sentence for offenses including incitement and corruption. Her lawyer says she is one of the prisoners whose terms have been commuted. It is believed to have been reduced by several years. Meanwhile, the government said Win Myint has been pardoned for a release. The former president is Aung San Suu Kyi's ally and was ousted in the 2021 coup. Aung San Suu Kyi led the pro-democratic National League for Democracy to a landslide victory in the 2020 general election. Her government was toppled in the coup and she was detained afterward. The international community has been calling for her release and the freeing of other detainees.
