Israel has bombed locations across Lebanon, including the capital Beirut, in devastating attacks that authorities say has killed at least 254 people and wounded more than 1,165.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had earlier said that Lebanon would not be included in the ceasefire. The United States and Iran have announced a suspension of all attacks for two weeks, and Tehran has agreed to allow the safe transit of vessels through the Strait of Hormuz. Iran says upcoming talks in Pakistan’s Islamabad on Friday do not mean that the end of the war is guaranteed. Oil prices have fallen after Trump announced the pause in attacks on Iran, with Brent crude trading at just below $95 a barrel.

Qatar, Saudi foreign ministers discuss US-Iran ceasefire and regional stability

Qatar’s foreign minister has spoken by phone with his Saudi counterpart to discuss the latest regional developments following the announcement of a US-Iran ceasefire. Qatar welcomed the ceasefire and stressed “the necessity of building on it urgently to prevent the expansion of the scope of tension in the region”, its foreign ministry said in a post on X. It added that the minister emphasised the importance of “ensuring the security of maritime passages and the freedom of navigation” to preserve regional stability and global supply chains.

Reports of Iranian air defences targeting drones

The sound of air defences in action can be heard in Tehran and some areas of Alborz province, according to the Iranian state news agency IRNA. IRNA said the air defences were targeting drones, according to initial reports, but their launch point remains unclear.

Trump claims victory in Iran — but is this really a win?

We have more from White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt:

    • She says Iran’s 10-point plan was “fundamentally unserious”, claiming that the country “put forward a more reasonable” plan that Washington deemed could be “a workable basis” for talks. The Trump administration will engage in negotiations over the next two weeks “so long as the Strait of Hormuz remains open, with no limitations or delays”. Trump “was made aware” of reports in Iranian media about the Strait of Hormuz being closed amid Israel’s attacks on Lebanon, but Leavitt says the US president expects the strait to be reopened “immediately, quickly and safely”. “Lebanon is not part of the ceasefire. That has been relayed to all parties involved in the ceasefire.” Leavitt claims Iran has indicated that it would turn over its enriched uranium, without providing further details. “That is a red line that the president is not going to back away from, and he’s committed to ensuring that takes place,” she said. “We hope it will be through diplomacy.”

Israel continues attacks on Gaza, occupied West Bank

With the world’s attention turned to Israel’s bombardment of Lebanon and the US-Iran ceasefire, Israel’s military has continued to attack Palestinians across Gaza and the occupied West Bank. As we’ve been reporting, an Israeli attack on a car in Gaza City has killed Al Jazeera correspondent Mohammed Wishah. Here’s a look at what else has been happening today:

    • The death toll in Israel’s attacks across Gaza since the start of its genocidal war in October 2023 has risen to at least 72,315. That includes at least 736 Palestinians killed since the “ceasefire” came into effect six months ago. Israeli forces stormed the towns of Turmus Ayya and Abu Falah, north of Ramallah in the occupied West Bank.  Israeli settlers also attacked Palestinians near Nablus, kidnapping and assaulting three youths in separate incidents in the villages of Qabalan and Einabus, the Wafa news agency reported.

  • Hamas condemns Israel’s killing of Al Jazeera journalist in Gaza

The Palestinian group has condemned the killing of Mohammed Wishah as the latest in “a long list of crimes targeting journalists in the Gaza Strip”. Israel’s killing of Wishah and other Palestinian journalists aims to “prevent the truth about the genocide” in Gaza from being disseminated, Hamas said in a statement. “International and human rights organizations will face a true test of their legitimacy by taking serious and effective action to pressure the occupation to stop its ongoing crimes against our Palestinian people,” it said.

Iran’s foreign minister says US must choose ceasefire or war via Israel

The US must choose between continued war via Israel or a ceasefire, Iran’s top diplomat says. “The conditions for a ceasefire between Iran and the United States are clear and explicit: America must choose either a ceasefire or the continuation of war through Israel; both cannot coexist,” Araghchi wrote on Telegram. “The world is witnessing the killings in Lebanon. Now the ball is in America’s court, and global public opinion is watching to see whether this country will fulfill its commitments or not.”

  • US sending JD Vance, Kushner and Witkoff to Iran talks in Pakistan

Leavitt at the White House says US Vice President JD Vance, as well as top Trump advisers Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff, will take part in negotiations in the Pakistani capital Islamabad. “The first round of those talks will take place on Saturday morning local time, and we know we look forward to those in-person meetings,” Leavitt told reporters.
